WITH A NEW 60,000SQFT HEAD OFFICE AND A STEADY PIPELINE OF WELL- ENGINEERED PRODUCTS, THE MARKET LEADER IN HEATING CONTROLS IS PRIMED FOR ITS NEXT PHASE OF GROWTH… EPH Controls opens new Cork HQ
Paul Mulcahy, General Manager.
Trevor Casey, Managing Director.
Ireland’s market leader in heating controls has made a major investment into new purpose-built headquarters in Cork. Positioning the thriving firm for its next phase of growth, EPH Controls’ new 60,000sqft site has been finished to world-class standards. Offering the space and amenities to enhance its development of innovative, market-leading products, alongside a new training facility for contractors and customers, the new HQ is conveniently located on the South Link Road in Cork City. Three decades of innovation The investment comes as EPH Controls approaches its 30th anniversary. Founded in 1997 by Managing Director Trevor Casey, the business was initially focused on heating controls for commercial, industrial and pharmaceutical applications as the sole agent in
Ireland for Swiss brand SAUTER. General Manager Paul Mulcahy joined in 2005, around the same time the firm diversified into residential heating controls. Making inroads into the burgeoning Irish housing market with a portfolio of unique products and with market-leading USPs, the firm forged ahead with the launch of its own brand of residential controllers, motorised valves and thermostats in 2008. “In 2012, we opened our UK office and built a team over there, while 2016 was another big year for us as we launched our heating control app, EMBER, which is now very popular in Ireland and the UK,” says Paul. “In the time since then, we’ve expanded the range dramatically with products suited for all types of heating systems.” Key launches over the years have included the DETACH PRO motorised valves with detachable power cables and actuators, CP4 series RF

on the road in Ireland and the UK. The business had outgrown the 23,000sqft, purpose-built site it moved to from a small unit in 2015, which lacked meeting rooms and warehouse space. Construction of the new HQ commenced in summer 2024 and the team has now moved in. The project team included main contractor CField Construction, architect Seán Holland, consulting engineer DL Group, mech-elec engineer Horizon Engineering, quantity surveyor MAC Construction Consultants and interior designer Fiona O’Keeffe. “This is our global HQ, and it has a world- class finish,” says Paul. “We have an open- plan office for sales and admin and another for tech support teams, three meeting rooms, a boardroom and an extremely- large canteen. “Our warehouse has 3,500 pallet spaces, dedicated quality control, a laser marking lab to customise products for customers, and eight packing stations for deliveries. “We also have a new training room, so the plan is to strengthen our business relationships by welcoming contractors and customers for training across our range of products.” Engineered for ease of use Drivers behind the success of EPH Controls include its well-engineered products, strong technical support, lengthy warranty and competitive pricing. “The basis of our products is they are easy to install and easy to use,” says Paul. “You shouldn’t even need to open the instruction manual, because they’re engineered to be self-explanatory and simple to use. “On top of that, our tech team is the backbone of our business as they know the products inside out and have an immense understanding of all heating systems. If someone calls here looking for technical
advice or help with a problem, the problem gets sorted on that phone call and that’s a huge advantage for installers stuck on a job. “Other key aspects behind our success include the quality and competitive pricing of our products and length of our warranty, with a five-year warranty across almost all products.” EPH Controls supplies products into three key sectors: heating and plumbing merchants, electrical merchants and other manufacturers. “We supply our products under our own brand and OEM branded for large manufacturers, which is a big area of expansion for us,” says Paul. “We have a complete range of thermostats for every application including oil and gas boilers and heat pumps, while UFH controls have become massive for us over the last few years – particularly in Ireland which has much greater adoption of heat pumps per capita than in the UK. “We also have new electronic thermostatic radiator valves, which have only been on the market for about 18 months but are very successful due to their ease of use.” Looking ahead, EPH Controls’ pipeline of innovation is set to continue with the launch of new UFH controls and a smart thermostat later in the year. Finally, the company founder Trevor Casey has been honoured as one of eight finalists demonstrating exceptional vision, leadership and impact within their industries and communities in the Established category of the 2026 EY Entrepreneur of the Year™ programme. The winner will be unveiled in November. “EPH Controls continues to expand every year,” says Paul. “We’re the market leader in Ireland, and a recognised name challenging major brands in the UK. We’re very positive about the year ahead.”
Programmable Room Thermostats, and hardwired and wireless programmers. Entering a new market segment with underfloor heating (UFH) controls in 2022, its pipeline of innovation has continued with the latest evolutions of the CP4 including the CP4v2, CP4D and CP5i. EPH Controls’ workforce has grown from only Trevor in 1997, and two people when Paul joined, to a team of 55. Around 35 employees are office based, including an admin team, warehouse operations, tech support and marketing, with 20 sales reps

OPINION COLUMN
trade talk PeakyPlumber with the
IN HIS FIRST COLUMN COVERING INDUSTRY ADVICE AND TOPICAL ISSUES FOR IRELAND’S PLUMBING & HEATING MAGAZINE, THE PEAKY PLUMBER LEE BROWN ASKS IF TRADE SHOWS ARE WORTH IT…
The short answer is yes, but only if you approach them with purpose. Like most things in business and life, you’ll get out exactly what you put in. If trade shows aren’t your thing, don’t go. It’s that simple. Forcing yourself into an environment that doesn’t suit your style is usually a waste of time and money. But if you decide to attend, the first and most important question is this: what are you actually going for? Free merch, beer or a t-shirt? For me, the answer has always been clear. More than 10 years ago, I started attending trade shows with one main objective: to strengthen my network and build real relationships with engineers. As a commercial engineer who has spent hours of my life on the road, having trusted contacts in every region has been a gamechanger. Being able to pick up the phone and speak to people I’ve actually met, shared a coffee and built trust with has been worth its weight in gold. From the visitor’s side, I treat every show with discipline. Before I even arrive, I check who is exhibiting and make a
focused shopping list. My rule is simple: I aim to properly visit a minimum of six to eight exhibitors, depending on the size of the show. I always make time for the manufacturers I use day in, day out. Whether my rep is there or not, it’s invaluable to put a name to a face. You never know when you’ll need technical help and your rep is on holiday. Trade shows also keep you sharp on what’s new. Many manufacturers choose to launch products at these events, and there’s nothing quite like getting your hands on the latest tools and kit before they hit the market. Seven years ago, I moved to the other side of the stand, working with manufacturers to demonstrate products. I still love it. You often get to see new launches before anyone else, but it’s hard graft. I recently filmed a full ‘door to door’ for our YouTube channel, leaving home, heading to Plumbex Limerick and returning 61 hours later. Fourteen of those hours were spent on the stand, including set up. Show days often start with breakfast at 7am and finish
long after the doors close, with dinner grabbed on the go. The preparation for manufacturers starts months before the show even opens. There’s a real buzz while it’s happening, followed by that familiar post-show slump when it’s all over. But the value is undeniable. Shows give manufacturers direct access to the people who actually use their products - the lifeblood of their business. I’ve stood there while plumbers have praised a product, and when they’ve let rip with frustration. The best manufacturers listen to it all. There’s always a debrief afterwards to see what worked and what needs improving.
So, for me, shows are a must and the bread and butter of our business. I schedule them in just like any other job on a workday, whatever side of the stands I’m on. A heating engineer by day, Lee Brown is also @thepeakyplumber with a combined audience of 21.7k followers across Instagram, TikTok and YouTube.

HYBRID HEATING PROGRAMME
LOCAL GAS NETWORK OPERATORS PHOENIX ENERGY, KINECX ENERGY AND EVOLVE ARE LAUNCHING A LARGE-SCALE HEATING GRANT TO STUDY THE PERFORMANCE OF HYBRID HEAT PUMP SYSTEMS IN OWNER-OCCUPIED HOMES ACROSS NI, WRITES NEIL MCCRACKEN FROM TRADE BODY NINGA… Hybrid Heating Programme
Neil McCracken, NINGA.
The Climate Change Act (Northern Ireland 2022) sets the framework for the Northern Ireland Executive to address climate change and reduce regional greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050. To meet this challenging target, it is vital that the major emitting sectors - power, heat, transport etc – are decarbonised through coordinated, evidence-based action. Space and water heating contribute around 80% of built environment emissions, with gas and oil the dominant fuels. By switching to gas and adding heating controls, an average home can reduce its annual carbon emissions by up to 2 tonnes CO₂e. The gas industry is focused on supporting the c200,000 homes which have gas available to them, but have not yet taken up the opportunity
to switch and generate immediate carbon emissions reductions. While we are working with industry partners to advance biomethane production and delivery in Northern Ireland - recognised by the NI Executive as a key component of its decarbonisation strategy - another opportunity lies in hybrid heating. This combines the energy efficiency of an air-source heat pump (ASHP) with the peak-demand reliability of a gas boiler in the form of a hybrid heat pump (HHP), accelerating decarbonisation of the NI residential sector. Phoenix Energy has undertaken extensive research into hybrid heating systems including carrying out several small- scale HHP trials in partnership with a number of local installers and housing associations. The results of these trials have demonstrated that HHPs can deliver significant carbon and cost savings in a
single consumer-friendly package. HHPs can utilise a home’s existing heating system and therefore be installed much quicker than an ASHP installation, causing minimum disruption. The ability to reuse the existing pipework and radiator network means consumers will benefit from a lower cost of install compared to a full ASHP system. HHP control systems can also be configured to be cost optimised to ensure that the lowest-cost energy vector (gas or electricity) is used to minimise energy bills. Local gas network operators Phoenix Energy, Kinecx Energy and Evolve are delighted to confirm the launch of a large- scale Hybrid Heating Programme, that will study the performance of hybrids in owner-occupied homes across NI. The programme seeks to understand the carbon reduction, consumer and network

impact from installing large numbers of HHPs in Northern Ireland and will offer up to 115 eligible applicants an allowance of £4,000 towards the cost of installing a hybrid heat pump system. The allowance is available across the whole of NI to both existing gas users and new customers converting from oil heating. The programme will be weighted to incorporate a wide variety of NI households to understand how HHPs perform in different housing types and how factors such as EPC rating, heat loss, occupant characteristics and lifestyle affect HHP performance. In addition, the performance of HHPs and gas boilers in participating homes will be monitored up to December 2028, with the resulting data used to assess carbon emission reduction, impact on household energy bills, effect on customer comfort and usability, and the seasonal performance factor of HHPs in comparison to other low-
carbon heating technologies in NI. The programme will also be seeking 55 households switching from oil to gas to also install associated monitoring equipment, to allow data sets to be compared across the trial period. These households will be rewarded with a £300 cashback for their participation in the programme. This exciting project will allow us to understand the impact of a rollout of HHPs across NI on the gas and electricity networks and help inform the development of regional low- carbon heating policy. After a successful tender process, local MCS-registered installation company McGaffin Mechanical has been appointed to deliver the scheme on behalf of NI’s three DNOs. The heating programme will be open for participant registration of interest soon, with the first installations targeted for June 2026.
I look forward to keeping you updated on the trial progress through the installation and monitoring phases.

Why heat pumps fail
A new book helps heating engineers understand why heat pump systems can underperform with helpful tips on how to maximise efficient operation. Why Heat Pumps Fail: The Engineering Mistakes That Kill Performance — And How to Avoid Them has been released by UK heat pump systems and controls specialist Craig Moreton. It explores the practical engineering, hydraulic and control issues that stop heat pumps delivering expected performance in real installations. Written for heating engineers, heat pump installers, plumbers, contractors, specifiers, consultants, manufacturers and commissioning engineers, the book examines why heat pump systems often underperform once installed. It argues that many poor outcomes are caused by design and application issues, including excessive flow temperatures, poor hydraulic design, weak emitter matching, incorrect buffer application, poor controls, domestic hot water behaviour, cycling, defrost and commissioning assumptions. For readers across Ireland and Northern Ireland, the book also looks at the practical transition from traditional boiler-led systems to low-temperature heat pump design. www.amazon.co.uk/WHY-HEAT- PUMPS-FAIL-Engineering/dp/ B0GWXMS8QS

BOOSTING SYSTEMS
THE SMALLEST MEMBER OF THE ESYBOX FAMILY, ESYBOX POP HAS BEEN ENGINEERED FOR INSTALLATIONS WHERE SPACE IS AT A PREMIUM, YET PERFORMANCE CANNOT BE COMPROMISED… Small footprint, big impact Adam Ferneyhough, Country Director for the UK & Ireland.
EsyBox Pop is compact enough to be installed under sinks, within cupboards or in tight utility areas.
Space constraints continue to be one of the most persistent challenges in modern domestic and light commercial plumbing installations. For this reason, fully-integrated, compact boosting systems are gaining traction including latest-generation, all-in-one solutions combining pump, controls and connectivity into a single, streamlined unit. The EsyBox Pop from DAB Pumps exemplifies this shift in design thinking. As the smallest member of the EsyBox family, it has been engineered specifically for installations where space is at a premium, yet performance cannot be compromised. Compact enough to be installed under sinks, within cupboards or in tight utility areas, it offers a practical solution to low-pressure challenges without requiring significant system redesign. However, compact form alone is not enough because for installers, ease of installation and long-term serviceability remain critical. The unit is supplied fully assembled and ready to install, with rotatable fittings that allow for quick integration into existing pipework layouts. Its modular construction also simplifies maintenance, enabling individual components to be accessed and replaced without dismantling the entire system, which is an important consideration for reducing time on site. Performance is driven by a variable frequency drive, which automatically adjusts motor speed in response to
providing assurance when specifying for drinking water applications. Adam Ferneyhough, Country Director for the UK & Ireland at DAB Pumps, says, “Installers don’t just need performance, they need products that are quick to fit, straightforward to maintain and compliant from day one. EsyBox Pop was developed with that in mind, giving a compact, all-in-one solution that removes complexity without compromising on output.” Alongside its technical credentials, the unit has also received international recognition for its design, securing the iF Design Award 2025. While awards are often seen as secondary to performance, in this case they reflect a considered approach to usability, where compactness, accessibility and aesthetics are combined without sacrificing functionality. Integrated systems such as the EsyBox Pop demonstrate how pressure boosting technology is adapting, by delivering reliable performance in even the most constrained spaces, while simplifying installation and ongoing maintenance for today’s installers.
demand. This not only ensures consistent water pressure at outlets but also helps to optimise energy consumption, supporting more efficient system operation over time. Integrated features such as a pressure sensor and non-return valve further enhance system reliability and protection. To bring these benefits to life, DAB Pumps has developed a dedicated product video. The aim is to clearly demonstrate how the EsyBox Pop performs in real-world installation scenarios by highlighting the simplicity of its integrated design, which is particularly valuable for installers working in tight or retrofit environments. Crucially for installers working on potable water systems, the EsyBox Pop has achieved WRAS approval, confirming compliance with UK water regulations and “The unit is supplied fully assembled and ready to install, with rotatable fittings that allow for quick integration into existing pipework layouts.”

DECARBONISATION SOLUTIONS
“Versatile’s climate ceilings provide an advanced, refined alternative for projects.”
Versatile Net Zero Radiators Versatile’s net-zero radiator range, is specifically engineered to be the perfect heat pump partner. Unlike traditional radiators requiring high flow temperatures, the units are designed to provide excellent output at ultra-low flow temperatures (35/30), significantly improving the coefficient of performance (COP) of heat pump systems. Despite their high performance, the radiators are incredibly slim with the XS version only 85mm deep. The product lineup includes: • Wall & Ceiling XS: An ultra-slim model in various colour options, providing both heating and cooling • Wall & Ceiling S: A versatile mid- sized option performing well in lifecycle analysis by reducing use of raw materials • Net Zero M (Wall & Ceiling): Designed for larger spaces requiring more robust output, the units also provide light/free cooling at high flow temperatures (16°C/18°C), further enhancing cooling COP
Architecturally-seamless climate ceilings Versatile’s climate ceilings provide an advanced, refined alternative for projects in which traditional ductwork or wall- mounted units are unfeasible. Circulating temperature-controlled water through concealed pipework, climate ceilings create a quiet, draught- free environment that distributes temperature evenly through radiant panels.
Well suited for healthcare, offices and public buildings, they offer: • Architectural seamlessness: Available in various modular formats such as metal panels, plasterboard constructions and ceiling sails • Multi-functional integration: Seamlessly house lighting, ventilation and acoustic elements • Energy efficiency: Use of radiant heat reduces energy consumption while providing superior comfort
