Battery recycling campaign nets “incredible” €520,000 for LauraLynn Children’s Hospice
WEEE Ireland has donated a further €40,000 to LauraLynn, bringing its total contribution to €520,000 since the partnership began 11 years ago. The gift to Ireland’s only children’s hospice will provide much-needed overnight respite stays for dozens of children with life-limiting conditions and their families.
Every battery recycled by WEEE Ireland goes towards a donation fund to support this vital work. “The funds that we have received from WEEE Ireland as a result of the battery campaign have had such a positive impact on the children and families who avail of LauraLynn’s care and specialised supports,”
said Kerry McLaverty, CEO of LauraLynn. Leo Donovan, CEO of WEEE Ireland added: “WEEE Ireland is delighted to be part of LauraLynn’s story since 2011. As well as supporting the fantastic work of LauraLynn, recycling batteries plays a huge part in helping protect the environment for future generations.”
Byrne elected to Lighting Europe Board
Gabriel Byrne, Lighting Association Ireland (LAI) delegate to Lighting Europe, was elected to its Executive Board during the recent general assembly in Brussels. Gabriel is a long-standing member of the lighting business community in Ireland and is currently Chairman of Fantasy Lights Group, the company he founded more than 30 years ago. He was a founding member and
Kirby Group Engineering has made a significant donation to Acquired Brain Injury Ireland (ABII) to support their work in Meath. ABII has established support, social and cognitive groups to help people right across the country. Kirby’s donation of €25,000 for the team at ABII Meath will be used by the charity to pilot a new clubhouse for their county. Ei Electronics is delighted to have supported Scoil Seanáin Naofa, Clonlara, Co. Clare in the purchase of 20 iPads for use by students. Ei provided a donation to the school which has over 290 pupils and 18 teachers, which contributed significantly towards the purchase of 20 iPads to the school during 2021. The iPads proved a useful resource initially when students were forced to attend classes remotely during the pandemic. Today, with a full return to classes, they are used widely by the pupils in the preparation of class projects and assignments. As part of its commitment to the community, Ei recently sponsored new outdoor facilities at Clonmoney National School. Some of which included two multi goals, allowing the students to play basketball, soccer, hurling and gaelic football, as well as a new balance beam being installed. Recent figures have shown that electricians are asked on average, five times a year to provide mates’ rates with an average discount of 45% offered. The survey conducted by OnePoll on behalf of ElectricalDirect, asked 500 electricians for their opinions on mates’ rates, as well as how often they get asked and the typical discounts they offer. The results highlighted how electricians are losing hundreds of pounds and Euros every year to mates’ rates, but many feel unable to say no when friends or family ask for discounts, according to the research. On average, each worker who took part in the survey gets asked to reduce their quotes five times a year, with only 1% of respondents saying they never get requests. Based on the average day rate, an electrician loses over £125 a day, by offering the typical level of discount, which works out at £657 a year. Designer Group Training Director, Brendan Kearns, along with two Designer Group apprentices, were delighted to attend the National launch of the Access to Apprenticeship programme on Thursday, 5 May at TU Dublin. Supporting this important initiative is fundamental to Designer Group’s company values and enables young people from diverse backgrounds to gain an insight into apprenticeship opportunities, meet potential employers and learn more about their career prospects. The apprentices met with Minister Simon Harris on the day to discuss their experience with the Access to Apprenticeship programme and their journey with Designer Group. Designer Group has been working with TU Dublin supporting the Access to Apprenticeship programme since its inception in 2017 and are proud to have employed many apprentices from the programme. It’s dedicated Training Academy hosts workshops from each Access to Apprenticeship group as part of Designer Group’s commitment to the programme, where attendees meet some of its own apprentices and take part in practical workshops to get a flavour of a ‘day in the life’ of an apprentice. Braham Electrical has appointed dedicated employee, Aisling Doyle as its new Junior Street Lighting Contracts Manager. Aisling is the first female in the company’s history to be appointed as a Contracts Manager. The Warrenpoint-based company are keen to encourage women into the industry and strongly believe that there are many roles for women to enter and develop to establish a gender- neutral culture. Aisling began her career with Braham Electrical in an administrative role in 2013 but showed a flare for contracts management in the street lighting section. She has been shadowing Street Lighting Director, Thomas Braham on many contracts and has been working closely with the contracting team to develop her competences in this area. Aisling has developed a depth of business knowledge in the organisation over the years and has a strong working
relationship with direct employees, customers, clients, and consultants alike. Aisling’s strongest attribute is her attention to detail, which allows her to complete her works with thoroughness, accuracy, and consistency. She is a great asset to the team who shows a true passion and interest in her new role. Aisling added: “Braham Electrical have always shown support towards my progression in my personal career, it is a great place to work and develop your skills with many available opportunities both on site and managerial positions. Stalwart of electrical industry passes away
John Fitzsimons, the founder of National Emergency Lighting (NEL), passed away in April. John was a stalwart of the electrical industry being thoroughly respected and fondly remembered by all who knew him. President of the EIFI and EMDA, John was instrumental in the development of the Irish National Standard for Emergency Lighting (I.S 3217) through his association and membership of technical committees of the IIRS initially and subsequently the NSAI. John served his time as an electrician and in his early career worked in the Electrical
Contracting Industry. He subsequently specialised in the Fire Alarm Industry joining AFA Minerva and then Champion Fire Defence with the view of developing the company’s early entry into the Emergency Lighting Industry. John’s legacy to the electrical industry is enormous. He educated, trained, mentored and supported a very large cadre of staff whilst he was at the helm of NEL. His past staff now permeate all areas of the electrical industry with many being company founders and operators in their own right.

Be prepared for 18th Edition updates GARY PARKER, ECA SENIOR TECHNICAL MANAGER TELLS YOU WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT AMENDMENT 2 TO THE WIRING REGULATIONS…
T here have been major events and changes since the release of the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations. Since the ubiquitous ‘blue book’ was published in 2018, the electrical contracting industry has encountered Brexit, Covid-19 and material shortages, Building Safety legislation and various green technology and other opportunities. Some of these have shaped the way we look at and think about electrical installations today. On March 28, 2022, the second Amendment to the 18th Edition was released. The new book (brown this time) is filled with important updates that electrical contractors need to know about.
RCD risk assessments These updated requirements relate to Regulation 411.3.3 – RCDs and socket outlets. Previous Editions allowed building owners to omit RCDs in some cases where a risk assessment had been done. This is still an option, but the requirements have been tightened up. Amendment 2 now insists that an RCD must be provided where children or disabled persons are present, regardless of whether a risk assessment has been done.

Of course, this does not restrict their uses in other locations. That is up to the designer, but it is worth noting that some limitations do remain regarding AFDDs. For instance, they are single-phase only and may require a minimum load to function correctly.

Additional earth electrodes Some new wording has been added to Regulation 411.4.2 recommending that an additional connection to earth, by means of an electrode, is provided to PME earthing systems. As mentioned earlier, the word ‘recommended’ is key here. This is just one option, and not mandatory. The existing Regulation 114.1 still remains and says that where a supply is given in
Regulations will be withdrawn on September 27,2022. Any new work from this date must conform to the new Amendment 2. Some of the wording has also been clarified. For example, some readers took the word ‘recommended’ to mean ‘mandatory’. This has been made clearer throughout, and should now be easier to understand.

Before the awards lunch concluded however, there was one last award to present, the Special Recognition Award. This award is presented to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution over many, many years to the electrical wholesale industry and to present this award to the worthy recipient, Gay Byrne, President of the EIFI, was welcomed to the stage. The 2022 Special Recognition Award went to Gerry Kelly, an individual who started his career in the family business of Phibsboro Electrical. He was a founder member of Fegime Ireland, and he did trojan work for the AEW throughout the turbulent years of the 1990s. He is not only respected for his business successes, however, as he is, without doubt, also one of the most popular individuals in the electrical industry. SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARD

F or the first time in its history, the celebrate and reward the businesses and individuals who have excelled in the WEEE Recycling and Staff Training Programme over the last year. Taking place on May, 18 at the Clayton Hotel, Liffey Valley, the event served as a great opportunity for all electrical wholesalers across the country to come together and renew old relationships which were sadly interrupted by Covid-19 over the last number of years. Association of Electrical Wholesalers (AEW) held an Awards lunch to The AEW were delighted with the large attendance, especially as each member group within the AEW was fully represented. There are six member groups within the association made up of CEF, EWL Electric, Fegime Ireland, IEBG, Kellihers and the Independents. All six member groups received two WEEE Recycling Awards, a ‘Best Performing Branch’, and a ‘Most Improved Branch.’ Similarly, all groups received two Staff Training Awards, a ‘Winner’ and a ‘Runner-Up’.
The lunch was hosted by RTE’s very own Sports Presenter, Des Cahill who kept the mood light and humorous throughout. The 12 WEEE Recycling Awards were presented by Leo Donovan before lunch was served and the 12 Staff Training Awards were presented by Tracy Hewett after lunch. Speaking to Ireland’s Electrical Magazine about the event, Ken Legros of AEW said: “As it was an inaugural event for the AEW, it was important to do it properly and to create the right impression from the outset. So, we invested heavily in the room set-up, the audio-visual show and a professional presentation, which really paid off. It was evident that everyone who attended thoroughly enjoyed themselves and we hope to repeat the AEW Awards Lunch every second year.”

WEEE Ireland is a not for profit organisation, committed to delivering cost effective compliance on behalf of its Producer Members. The organisation represents 96 per
cent of the Irish battery industry and 74 per cent of the household electrical and electronic industry. It has been operational since 2005 and has been the scheme of choice in Ireland maintaining majority market share across all sectors. WEEE Ireland operates under the approval of the Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications.

STAFF TRAINING AWARDS AEW ASSOCIATION OF ELECTRICAL WHOLESALERS AWARDS 2022
T he second part of the AEW Awards lunch was the Staff Training Awards presented by Tracy Hewett, Head of Education and Training with the EDA (Electrical Distributors’ Association). Founded in 1914, the EDA is the trade association for electrical wholesale distributors in the UK.The Staff Training Awards rewarded the best learner in each group as well as the runner-up with points being awarded for the results in each
individual module. A distinction earned three points, a credit earned two points and a pass earned one point. The more modules that a learner completed and the better the results achieved in each module, determined who won the awards. The Staff Training Awards consisted of 12 awards altogether, two for each of the 6 groups, one ‘Winner’ and one ‘Runner-Up’ These were presented in alphabetical order, starting with CEF.

SAFETY CAMPAIGN
A CAMPAIGN EMPHASISING THE IMPORTANCE OF WORKING SAFELY TO AVOID FALLS FROM MOBILE ELEVATING WORK PLATFORMS (MEWPS) HAS BEEN LAUNCHED BY THE INTERNATIONAL POWERED ACCESS FEDERATION (IPAF)… IPAF launches ‘Don’t Fall for It!’ targeted safety campaign
A campaign emphasising the importance of working safely to avoid falls from Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) has been launched by the International Powered Access Federation (IPAF). The ‘Don’t Fall for It!’ safety campaign outlines the possible underlying causes of falls from the platform when using MEWPs, which almost always lead to serious injury or death. It offers key advice to mitigate the most common risks, as identified in IPAF’s incident reporting and analysis. Peter Douglas, CEO and MD of IPAF said: “The IPAF ‘Don’t Fall for It!’ safety campaign aims to instil safe working practices and remind operators and managers of positive steps they can take to reduce the risk of such incidents. The message is simple – select the correct machine, don’t take risks, don’t cut corners, and wear the correct personal fall protection equipment in boom-type platforms.” Brian Parker, IPAF’s Head of Safety & Technical, added: “If you find yourself tempted to do something different to what you know is the right and proper way to work, or if ever asked to do something you think isn’t safe by a colleague or supervisor, then ‘Don’t Fall for It!’ Far better to think twice and save a life – whether it is a workmate’s or your own”.
Key points: Key points of guidance in the IPAF ‘Don’t Fall for It!’ safety campaign include: • Plan thoroughly – conduct a proper MEWP site assessment, select the correct machine for the work and use professionally trained operators and supervisors. • Know your machine – operators should be trained on the machine type they are using and familiarised on the specific model. Operators should assess that the machine is suitable for the task and conditions and adequate in terms of reach, articulation, and load-bearing capacity. Machine knowledge includes whether personal fall protection equipment (PFPE) should be used. • Clip on – if personal PFPE is required, all occupants of the platform must attach their lanyard to the correct
anchor point. Ensure movement within the platform is possible while attached, and do not move the machine or elevate the platform until and unless all occupants are attached. • Set up and manoeuvre the machine/ platform effectively – occupants should never need to over-reach, unfasten PFPE, step or climb on guardrails or otherwise extend the safe working envelope of the platform. Ensure vertical MEWPs are positioned and repositioned as necessary to allow easy access to the area of work. • Stay inside the platform/attached – always stay inside the platform. Where there is a requirement for PFPE, you must wear it. Do not exit the platform at height; unclip/exit only on completion of work when lowered to the ground.

FESS OPERATIVE ASSESSMENTS
MARKED IMPROVEMENTS FOR FESS ASSESSMENT PASS RATES... Industry group updates to the FESS Operative Assessments
F ollowing recent updates to the Fire, Emergency and Security Systems (FESS) Operative Assessments by an industry working group, pass rates for FESS assessments have seen marked improvements. There are four sector disciplines recognised under FESS which mirror the FESS apprenticeship pathways. These are; Fire, Fire and Emergency Lighting, Security and Fire and Security. For those who have been working in the industry for a number of years without formal qualifications, it was agreed an assessment would be developed for a FESS Systems Operative to meet these sector requirements. The ECS FESS Operative assessments launched in July 2021 and questions are
aimed at a Level 2, covering aspects of installation, maintenance, and planning across each of the above pathways. All of these assessments are available by remote invigilation through the ECS Employer Portal and MyECS system to give greater flexibility and save time and cost. Concerned by a potential lack of clarity in the wording of some questions and lower than expected pass rates, the JIB contacted industry representatives in 2021 to review the question banks and ensure the questions were correct, properly constructed, and clear for users.
New question banks went live in March 2022 and pass marks have improved in all areas. Further promotion of the relevant training routes, for the Operative Assessment and qualification routes will continue to ensure relevant preparation and routes are available. T he regional heat for SkillELECTRIC took place in May as part of the Construction Industry Training Board NI (CITB NI)’s annual SkillBuild NI Finals 2022. SkillELECTRIC is the electrical industry’s top skills competition, celebrating the best practical and technical skills from across the UK. Sponsored by Edmundson Electrical, the NI heat held at CITB NI’s Nutt Corner Training Centre put our very best recruits through their paces. The top three competitors were: 1st – Daniel Knox, South West College; 2nd – Josh Young, North West Regional College and 3rd – Thomas Magee, Belfast Metropolitan College. All finalists were presented with a fantastic bag full of tools from sponsor, Edmundson Electrical – a hugely enthusiastic supporter of the colleges’ electrical apprenticeship courses. Only the highest scorers from all regional qualifying heats combined will be invited to take part in the SkillELECTRIC grand final in November. The UK finalists will be announced later in the summer.
SkillELECTRIC provides a platform to showcase the best young talent working in the industry and highlight the opportunities that becoming an apprentice electrician provides. Those who demonstrate exceptional talent also have the chance to represent their country at EuroSkills and WorldSkills events around the globe. SkillBuild Seventy-nine of the brightest recruits and top performers within construction and trades apprenticeship programmes from across Northern Ireland competed against each other at the SkillBuild NI to win in categories ranging from electrical installations to wall and floor tiling. The SkillBuild NI competition is designed to test skills, technique, ability within tight timeframes, and identifies the top performers in 10 different trade areas. Winners from the NI finals – to be announced in July – will have the opportunity to represent Northern Ireland in the SkillBuild UK National Finals leading potentially to represent Team UK at WorldSkills in 2024.
The biannual WorldSkills event is the largest and most prestigious vocational competition in the world. SkillBuild NI competitors regularly out perform all other regions of the UK at both SkillBuild UK and WorldSkills competitions. Ireland’s Electrical Magazine will showcase the victorious electrical apprentice of the 2022 competition in the August/September issue of the magazine.
