Dragi gosti,
Dear Guests,
Thank you for choosing Air Serbia and a special welcome to those of you travelling on holiday to Serbia. September is arguably the best month to visit – it’s warm, everything is enveloped in the golden colours of autumn, and the rain is still at bay. In fact, it’s the perfect time for outdoor activities in Serbia, and we have some great ideas of what to do in this issue. Serbia is not well-known for its water features, but travel to the

There are three other magnificent falls which all make for a great day out, and you can read about them on page 82.

Serbia, while those looking for a slightly smaller challenge can hike through Tara National Park or Fruška Gora. There are plenty of trails throughout Serbia that provide breath-taking views of our natural beauty – turn to page 86 to read about some of the best. In case you’re still looking for ideas, why not go online for some last-minute inspiration before you land? Our Airbus fleet offers internet access through our Wi-Fly service, so you can plan that hike, canoeing trip or horse riding experience in Serbia all from the air. Or, alternatively, we have some great videos showcasing Serbia’s tourism offering and cuisine on Elevate Play, our free service for streaming films, TV shows and music to personal devices. More and more people are discovering what Serbia has to offer, and as the flag carrier, we’re very happy to play a role in facilitating their travel. In the first half of 2017, we carried 1.12 million people to and from Belgrade, with many guests stopping to explore our beautiful capital and the attractions further afield.

Having worked in several senior positions in companies across Europe, Tomas Smolvud decided to end his demanding career in 2016. He redesigned his life and began to live adventurously. He always nurtured a passion for mountaineering sports, and his feelings for a Serbian lady that brought him to the mountains of Serbia, which he writes about for us in this issue.

KOJA MESTA VOLIŠ U BEOGRADU?
1. Muzej Nikole Tesle, jer se u njemu, osim 160.000 originalnih dokumenata, hiljada knjiga i fotografija, istorijskih i tehničkih predmeta, nalaze i posmrtni ostaci velikog Tesle.
WHO IS IVAN? First of all, Ivan is the father of one fantastic Nina and the hus- band of one extraordinary Jelena. A God-seeker. An artist who has a col- lection of sport kites. At the moment I’m dedicated to my musical-poet- ic play “A couple of verses for us”, in which I use the language of po- ets and the most beautiful music of our region to tell a love story, which is everyone’s a little bit, and most of all mine.
3. Košutnjak, zbog kojeg Beograd i dalje diše. WHICH PLACES IN BELGRADE DO YOU LOVE?
1. Nikola Tesla Museum, because in it, apart from 160,000 original documents, thousands of books and photographs, historical and technical objects, there are also the remains of the great Tesla. 2. The National Theatre, because it is the centre of cultural events in our country. 3. Košutnjak, through which Belgrade continues to breathe.

WHY ARE YOU With the play “A couple of verses for us” we are going on a two-week tour on 22 nd September, and the musicians and I will perform in Toronto, Edmon- ton, Vancouver and other Canadi- an cities. We’ve already made guest appearances in many theatre halls around the world and it is impressive to see how strangers are amazed by our language and culture. That’s why I’m travelling to Canada with great joy.
WHAT DOES TRAVELLING MEAN TO YOU? For me travelling is a meeting that changes me irrevers- ibly. Thus, Jerusalem left a great impression on me during my visit in Easter 2009. It has been unmis- takably touched by the history of the world. Moscow is also a city that has changed me fundamentally.

Berlin Počinje najveći Sajam tehnike
Berlin Biggest technical fair opens
The IFA consumer electronics fair, which takes place in Berlin from 1 st to 6 th September, is bigger than ever this year, according to organisers. The emphasis of this year’s fair is on virtual reality and innovative technical devices that show how our lives and work will look in the future. Famous companies from around the world will not miss this event, because the IFA is one of Europe’s most important trade fairs. This is best illustrated by the fact that last year’s fair alone saw agreements reached on deals worth more than $4.9 billion.

Milano Izložba o Gustavu Klimtu U Muzeju moderne umetnosti u
Milan Exhibition of Gustav Klimt
Milan’s Museum of Modern Art is currently presenting a multimedia exhibition dedicated to the works of the Austrian painter Gustav Klimt, with the centenary of his death to be commemorated next year. The exhibition does not present the artist’s paintings on canvas, but is rather a multimedia presentation of Klimt’s pieces with his photographs on the walls of the museum, accompanied by the ambient reciting of poems and music. Klimt was an Austrian painter and one of the founders of the Vienna Secession. The exhibition runs until 7 th January next year. London Luxury hotel for cats A luxury hotel for cats has opened in Norbury, southwest London, boasting six apartments and a private yard where they can prowl and enjoy themselves to their hearts’ content. The hotel’s menu is tailored to cater for the needs of each cat, while they can also enjoy spa treatments, which include relaxing paw massages. This is the fifteenth hotel for cats from the Longcroft Luxury group, and the demand for such hotels is best illustrated by the fact that many owners book accommodation for their cats months in advance. Thus, some of them already know where they will spend Christmas.

SELFIE CULTURE
The pressure of spreading false perfection. They will record where we’ve been, with whom, why... But what are we really on the inside? What’s the truth in all of that? A loss is created with real and actual life, which isn’t as easy and pretty as the filters that colour us. If we are attractive in a photograph, it is great, if we are not, it is instantly erased and has no value. We are focused on ourselves and our monitors, in a desire to gain the approval of others via the virtual world. We think about liking and collecting‘likes’. The Internet world unconsciously enslaves a person. We seek the confirmation of others, missing opportunities to enjoy the world that surrounds us... This photograph expresses that. It was shot at a concert of the band Massive Attack in Pula in August 2016. It received an award at the prestigious Andrei Stenin International Photo Contest 2017, which is held in Moscow.

PETAR OMČIKUS, SLIKAR I AKADEMIK PETAR OMČIKUS, PAINTER AND ACADEMIC JOŠ NISAM NASLIKAO NAJBOLJU SLIKU I HAVE YET TO PAINT MY BEST PICTURE
About the sea that stretches before him like a canvas, about student days and life in Paris with Kosa Bokšan, about why he did not want to have anything to do with fools and future fools, and always, including this time, about painting, his only vice, to which, as he says, he is forever enslaved...
Tekst / Words: Ana Vodinelić, Jazmina Klanica Fotografije / Photography: Oliver Bunić
S likarstvo je mnogo ozbiljna stvar, a moja sudbina. Volite li reke? Rijeka
P ainting is a very serious thing, and my destiny. There’s nothing more beautiful than when painting starts... The world is created then, says painter Peter Omčikus at the beginning of this interview for Elevate. - I started painting almost from birth. It was my first love. I was born in Sušak near Ri- jeka, and I did drawings of seascapes as a boy. The sea stretched like a canvas in front of me. And the scent of the sea, which even now makes me tremble with happiness. I doubt I’d have been able to do anything else well, and luckily I didn’t have a dilemma about what my profession would be. You live in Belgrade, without the sea. Do you like rivers? I love them and to me they look like the sea, only smaller. You can feel that the Pan- nonian Sea was once there. When did you see other regions of the world for the first time? I had two older brothers and when they started studying in Belgrade, I joined them. Rijeka was a province at the time when I was born. In the newspaper, there were also art

U toj muci se for- miraš. – Mlad čovek voli da larma, mno- go toga mu smeta i mnogo ispro- bava. Trpa se svuda i nameće. Ta-

Poneli smo boje i čet- kice. Posle smo nastavili put Zadra, preko Dubrovnika i Sarajeva, do Be- ograda. Na studijama su poče-

tough in the beginning or not? At that time, many of our painters had already gone there, Lubarda, Milunović etc. Paris was a fad for artists. I remember that I ar- rived from Belgrade by train at the great rail- way and metro station Gare de Lyon. It was spring. In those early years everything was slightly impoverished in Paris for Bosa and I. We lived from my plastering, and what is that if not wall painting? And so I flailed around with a brush... I liked the smell of paint as I painted walls and large surfaces. It was not easy, but I knew I would endure. Did you face the vanity of other artists? I didn’t, everyone fought to survive as they knew how. In this struggle you form yourself. My first address there was offered to me by the painter Ristić. He stood in the attic when I came to his place with Bosa and surprised him with our arrival. How many studios left a mark on your canvases? First I painted in a partially demolished atelier outside Paris, then after a five-year stay I could afford my own studio. From shacks and sheds Kosa and I would sometimes make studios. I received many people and have never been lonely while I worked. It was im- portant for me to learn languages, to hear the opinions of others. Did you meet world famous painters in Paris? At one major exhibition I saw Pablo Pi- casso, a small man of huge talent. We didn’t meet, but I’ve remembered that day. Were there also difficult moments? A young man likes to make a noise, a lot bothers him and he tries a lot of things. He is tough everywhere and imposes himself. That’s also how I accepted the way I coped in Paris. The strong will for a different life than the one we’d left behind led us forward. I lived on a tight budget in a city that gave me the creative space of the famous and un- known. My wife and I were fortunate that we immediately found others who were simi- lar to us, and in the beginning we lived in a hotel on the avenue Saint-Germain-des- Prés and there we met most of the artists. After three months, I went to London and sold some of my paintings there. I was look- ing forward to returning to Paris, which is more picturesque than London. Paris has a great tradition, for artists and wild people. All that art and artists need is there. Are you a vain artist? I am, of course. I love trouble in the pro- cess of searching and creating, wandering. Have you destroyed some of your works? No. I’m patient to reach the goal even when it’s hard. When you paint a lot of pic- tures, you have a great array of attempts, and that’s also progress. There were pictures
wasn’t nervous, even though I had been an average student in primary and secondary school. I didn’t ask myself whether or not I would be a great painter. I loved painting a lot and that led me. Whatmemoriesdoyoucarryfromyour student days? I had the honour of learning from Pro- fessor Ivan Tabaković. He loved his students and gave them incentives for further devel- opment. He was a gentleman, intelligent, strict, witty, curious. It was magical for me to be close to him and to believe that per- haps even I, then an uneducated young man from the provinces, could be an artist. With me in class, among others, were Mića Popo- vić and Bata Mihailović. In the middle of the student year, I led all my classmates to see the sea for the first time in my birthplace of Sušak. We brought paints and brushes. We didn’t have any politicised lessons in mind, but they awaited us as such upon our return to Belgrade. Tabaković complained about us going and found a good model for us for practise, but he didn’t succeed in prevent- ing us from going. With your colleagues you made some kind of painting commune; out of re- bellion or as a challenge? We had no need for rebellion, just a de- sire to spend time by the sea. The locals wel- comed us, we looked to them like a strange, lively group of young men and woman. Af- ter that, we continued our journey to Za- dar, via Dubrovnik and Sarajevo, to Belgrade. During our studies they started blackmail- ing us because we dared to set up the Za- dar group and behave freely, so everyone from our class was thrown out of our stud- ies, except Mića Popović and his future wife, who was also a student. That was a major blow for you? I had the comfort of being a student with a model, with professors, and then I lost that. Each of us painted at home, we met at Dragoslav Mihajlović Mihiz’s place. Later we spontaneously founded the group of Eleven. Kosara Bokšan was first your class- mate, then your wife. Was that a dou- ble gain for both of you? We were young, 20-year-olds, full of am- bition, inspirations, passions ... Everything came together in our relationship, so it was easy to develop. And those were not easy times... We were not capable of being com- munists, nor of being socio-realistic painters for suitability. We strayed towards a different, more wild art. We renounced safe existences with a secure salary in the workplace. But we continued meeting and thus survived. Did you starve as an artist who didn’t accept the rules of the regime? I coped, so I was never hungry. You arrived in Paris in 1952. Was it
I LIKE TO PAINT PEOPLE, EVERYTHING IS THERE You once said: “All people are good for painting. It’s un- important whether they have a big nose or some other prominent feature. The person is important for me.” I like to paint people. Everything is there. Every paint- er actually spends their entire life painting one picture, and their life is the frame. I would return to a painting for additions after a while, and I would also paint sever- al pictures simultaneously. One picture can answer the question of another picture.

ko sam prihvatio i svoje snalaženje u Parizu. Posle tri mese- ca otišao sam u London i tamo pro- dao neke svoje slike. Volim muku u procesu traženja i stvaranja, lutanje. Njime sam zaro- bljen. Tu godine ništa ne menjaju. Koliko vam je titula srpskog akademika olakšala život? – Ni to nije išlo lako, uvek se ne- ko ispreči. Ugodno je imati tu titulu, a i konačno te tada ostave na miru
that didn’t give themselves to me, I remained short of them. Pictures are living things; they sometimes don’t give themselves. You’ve also created many sculptur- al works. Have you found yourself in sculptingmoreorlessthaninpainting? A true painter seeks eternally, and I sculpted in clay as a boy. I loved everything that is artistic. Sculpture has its own world of forms and surfaces, and it gave me some answers about painting. I’ve never declared myself a sculptor, which is a very serious craft. When did your homeland recognise you as a great painter? That description“great painter”was not my aspiration. My creative path progressed despite that, over time you become mature enough to overcome some painting prob- lems and then you feel like you’ve done something. Nobody invites anyone to pres- ent themselves. That is a huge arena of a di- verse world, of the clever and foolish. There were also those who went astray, as well as those of us who found ourselves in this world. Has painting given you a comforta- ble life? I’ve never lived comfortably, nor is that good for an artist. Doing what I love is com- fort. Painting hasn’t prevented me from do- ing anything, and I’m still waiting to gain from it. I’m enslaved by it. Nothing has changed in that for years. How much did the title of a Serbian ac- ademic ease your life? That didn’t go easy either, with some- one always interrupting. It’s beneficial to have that title, and then you are finally left alone by those who love to seek mistakes in oth- ers. But I’m not ravenous for glory. I’ve always competed with myself. That is especially so when crises arise and you doubt yourself. It’s hard to be a clever man, I never flatter myself. Painting is my only vice. Even after returning to Serbia, you didn’t declare your political persua- sion. On purpose? I declined offers to get closer to par- ties. A man doesn’t change easily, and I can find myself even without politics. And I love Serbia, its monasteries, colours, tradition. You have remained a Yugoslav? I’m a mix, I wouldn’t divide people easily ... I’m Dalmatian in my soul, that’s not some- thing that’s lost. A man does not change. Do you sometimes feel a loss of your desire to paint? Nooo, never! I have always been a paint- er. I managed to preserve my hands and fin- gers to serve me. My life story would always begin and end with painting. Do you have any unfulfilled desires? I do, I have yet to paint the best picture. And I want to go back to Korčula and paint by the sea.
I diskusije uče. THE WALL I’M CONSTANTLY JUMPING OVER Why didn’t you teach the painting craft to others? I saw that professors lose a lot of time with fools. I didn’t want to work with fools and future fools. And through dis- cussions we learn. But every painter is always alone in front of his picture and problem. That’s a wall you’re con- stantly jumping over.
Pogotovo kad dođe kriza i sumnjaš u sebe. I volim Srbiju, njene manasti- re, boje, tradiciju. Ostali ste Jugosloven? – Neee, nikad! Uvek sam slikar. – Imam, još nisam naslikao naj- bolju sliku. I želim da opet odem na Korčulu i slikam pored mora.
