H&AMECHANICAL STEPOUT INMEMORYOFFOUNDER Big-hearted staff at H&A Mechanical Services have pounded the pavement to raise a phenomenal £20,000 for a local mental health charity. Over 60 employees, family and friends donned their running/walking shoes to take part in the Belfast City Marathon in memory of the company’s founder, Hugh McWilliams. H&A, based in Draperstown, Co Londonderry, was blown away by the total raised and thanked all those involved, stressing how much the money would mean to people in the local community. The company chose mental health organisation STEPS as its partner for this fantastic event. And the cherry on top; H&A also received an award for entering the most teams (13) in this year’s Belfast City Marathon. Established in 1993, H&A has grown from a payroll of 6 people to an employee base of over 200. www.hamechanicalservices.com

SAINT-GOBAINSETTOEXIT UKPLUMBINGMARKET Saint-Gobain has agreed the sale of three of its remaining four UK distribution brands specialized in plumbing, heating and sanitaryware products. Wolseley UK is expected to complete the acquisition of Neville Lumb, DHS and Bassetts from Saint-Gobain in early 2022. The company has also entered into exclusive negotiations with Wolseley UK for the sale of Ideal Bathrooms, its remaining UK distribution brand. Together, these four brands employ 485 people and have 25 outlets, generating a turnover of approximately €130 million in 2020. On successful completion of these transactions, given the divestment of Graham (turnover of approximately €260 million in 2020, across 130 outlets) in August 2021, Saint-Gobain will no longer have any distribution brands specialised in plumbing, heating and sanitaryware products in the UK.

Kerrigan Mechanical has announced two new promotions, as the company continues to expand. In recognition of his contribution to the growth and success of the business, Francis McNulty has been promoted to the

that his projects come in within budget and on time. Meanwhile, Adam Dent has been promoted to the role of Contracts Manager. Adam has extensive experience in mechanical installations and engineering solutions both on a domestic and commercial level. He has taken a particular hands- on interest in coordination and is familiar with the increasing requirements which BIM and Revit impose, and he ensures that Kerrigan’s role as lead coordinator is fulfilled. FEEDBACK FROM CUSTOMERS, DESIGNERS AND INSTALLERS USED TO DEVELOP INNOVATIVE PRODUCTS...

EPH launches exciting new thermostat range

W ith its commitment to evolving its designs for seamless installation, EPH Controls continues to create quality and innovative products. The Cork-based company’s latest range has been developed with input from customers, installers, heating system designers, and industry partners. It includes three brand-new product lines, as well as some new features on old favourites. providing maximum comfort to the homeowner, while NEW TO MARKET: UFH10 Introducing the highly anticipated UFH10 Underfloor Heating Wiring Centre, which is designed to work with the

NEW TO MARKET: RD SERIES Next, meet the RD Series recessed thermostats with their sleek and fresh design. These are for use in traditional or underfloor heating systems. There are two thermostats in the range; the RDT, which is non-programmable with setback function, and the RDTP, which is the programmable version. The RDT can be wired to have a setback temperature, which can be user-defined from 1°C up to 10°C. This allows the heating system to operate at a lower temperature when the demand for heat is off. This continuous lower level of heat ensures that the system never gets too cold, giving the customer straightforward and efficient temperature control of underfloor areas.

EPH range of digital and mechanical thermostats. Up to 10 zones can be controlled with this unit. Up to four EPH TA230 thermal actuators can be used with each zone, allowing potential control of up to 40 zones or underfloor circuits. Conveniently, two of the zones can be configured to control radiator or hot water zones using zone valves. There are 4 time- inputs for installations, where EPH non-programmable thermostats with setback function are being used. This setback feature maximises control and saves energy. The UFH10 contains two spare fuses and can be wall or DIN rail mounted for added convenience to the installer.

As our loyal customers have come to expect, all of these products come with EPH’s 5-year warranty.”

Meanwhile, the RDTP has an option to attach an external temperature sensor. It is also possible to detach the front face of the thermostats from the rear housing, which contains the wiring and relay. Each of these low-profile thermostats has a large backlit screen devised with the end-user in mind. The contemporary recessed design of this range appeals to style conscious homeowners and installers alike, making them an obvious choice for the modern home. NEW TO MARKET: HD SERIES Ingenuity continues with the new surface-mounted HD Series of stylish digital dial thermostats. First up, is the mains powered HDT, followed by the HRT, which is battery powered. These will work with both modern underfloor and traditional heating systems. The battery-operated HRT allows an installer to upgrade from an existing traditional two wire mechanical dial thermostat to a modern sleek digital thermostat, without a difficult and expensive cable run. The HD thermostats are extremely easy to use,

with an on/off switch and a rotary dial to adjust temperature. Keeping efficiency in mind, these devices also have the setback function as described above for optimum control. TA THERMAL ACTUATOR RANGE Elsewhere, EPH’s TA range of thermal actuators, available in 230VAC (TA- 230) and 24VAC (TA-24), have been consistently popular with installers. With their M30 x 1.5mm connection, the TA range can be used in various modern and retrofit scenarios. These have a convenient actuator position indicator and are normally closed by default. Operation can be reversed mechanically, if normally open is required. Responding to feedback from installers, EPH has also developed the new TA230S, which contains an auxiliary switch offering more control than a traditional two wire thermal actuator. NEW-LOOK C SERIES Finally, the highly regarded C series has also had an elegant redesign. This surface- mounted range of thermostats suits almost

any installation. There are mains-powered programmable and non-programmable versions, the CDT2 and the CDTP2, as well as battery-powered programmable and non-programmable versions, the CRT2 and the CRTP2. This range of thermostats has a normally open and normally closed connection, so they can be used for heating as well as cooling applications. Also, from a commercial application perspective, these thermostats can be locked and limited in their range. The neat modern style of the C series appeals to homeowners, and the variety of the range means there is a thermostat suitable for any situation an installer may encounter. EPH Controls is delighted to be able to bring these new products to the marketplace and is confident they will fulfil the needs of our customers and installers. Trevor Casey, EPH Managing Director, added: “As our loyal customers have come to expect, all of these products come with EPH’s 5-year warranty. We are also proud to provide best-in-class after sales and technical back up to our installers, merchants and homeowners.”

AQUALLA REFLECTS ON ITS INCREDIBLE 10-YEAR JOURNEY... Big aspirations as firmcontinues to expand and innovate

Steven Allaway 10 years ago when he founded Aqualla.

A rriving on the scene 10 years ago, Co Down-based business Aqualla has enjoyed staggering growth, building a strong reputation and loyal customer base in the process. But when he first decided to go into business for himself and set up his own bathroom supply firm, Aqualla Managing Director Steven Allaway could never have imagined the company would get to where it is today. With years of experience in the industry under his belt, Steven decided to forge his own path and founded Aqualla in 2011. “It was not a decision I took lightly,” Steven told Ireland’s Plumbing and Heating Magazine. “I carried out months of extensive research beforehand, used my savings and took out loans to get the business off the ground. It was daunting at first.” However, his initial fears over whether he would have enough customers on the books to stay afloat quickly faded away. Instead, Steven’s worry soon become whether he would have enough stock to keep up with demand. At the start, the business was run entirely by Steven and his retired mum. She had offered to help with the administration work, allowing Steven to build up relationships with customers and establish the brand. When they were not busy taking orders – up to 6-7 a day - the pair could be found in the warehouse picking orders and packing for delivery. From those humble beginnings, Aqualla has undergone rapid expansion. In 2017, the business employed 10 people; today, that figure sits at 48 people, with imminent plans to bring on more staff. Steven attributes a large part of Aqualla’s success to the foundations he set for the company at the very start - good quality products and an unparalleled customer service.

CELEBRATING 10YEARS

Steven Allaway, Managing Director and Noel Conroy, Company Sales Director.

“Coming from a sales background, I know the value of good customer service and that has always been at the heart of everything we do,” Steven said. “This business is based on building strong relationships and we have worked hard to deliver a good service. It is also important to us that we continue to evolve and make improvements in everything we do; we strive to keep things fresh, dynamic and innovative.” Steven also prides himself on having an excellent team and creating a work environment where staff feel valued. “We have always striven to be an employer of choice; we invest in our people and feel it is important to have a good culture in the workplace, so that every member of the team can feel proud to work for Aqualla,” he added. “I want to pay tribute to all those who have helped to make Aqualla what it is today, particularly our loyal customers who have supported us for many years, as well as our teams across all departments,

and those sales people who work in the showrooms.” While the last decade has been a real success story for Aqualla, Steven and team are not content to rest on their laurels. In fact, the firm has aspirations of doubling its workforce and turnover within the next 3-5 years. Steven concluded, “Looking forward, we want to create more employment locally, and to continue growing our revenue and product ranges. We are not necessarily looking to significantly increase the number of customers, we just want to develop the ones we have and continue providing them with the best products and quality service to support their own business growth. “We also want to be recognised as a leading brand within the UK and Ireland, and I think we are well on track to achieve that. “We never thought we would be where we are now. It has been an incredible journey and has given us the confidence to keep expanding and innovating.”

ANOTHER YEAR OF RECORD GROWTH FOR BATHROOM SUPPLIER... Aqualla plans to take brand to ‘next level’ in 2022

W hile Aqualla has been on a steady growth trajectory since its inception a decade ago, the last two years in particular have been a remarkable boom period for the Newtownards-based firm. 2020 was a milestone year for the company - in terms of both product sales and overall direction – with the business growing by more than 30%. And this trend continued in 2021, culminating in an incredible 70% growth. Noel Daly, Sales Director at Aqualla, attributes this unprecedented era of expansion to three major factors. The first, unsurprisingly, was down to the surging home market, with the advent of

lockdowns releasing a wave of pent-up demand, resulted in record sales. Noel added: “Before Covid, a survey found that around 7% of people were looking to upgrade their bathrooms. Post-Covid, that figure rocketed to over 30%, which has led to incredible growth. There is a lot of spending going on at present, and we know that will not last forever, so it is important that we increase our market share during this period. We feel we have done that.” The second factor which has undoubtedly contributed to Aqualla’s rapid growth was the takeover in 2020 of iconic bathroom brand, Adamsez. This move gave Aqualla the chance to

breathe new life into a historic brand, which Noel described as “a sleeping giant”. “We could see the potential of where we could take Adamsez and we invested heavily in the brand relaunch,” he added. “The results have been beyond our expectations. Adamsez’s monthly revenue has trebled, with November being the biggest sales month in many years. “There is still so much we can do. We introduced 10 new Adamsez designs in 2021 - all of which were a success - and we will be bringing out a further six in early 2022.” Finally, the acquisition of Aqualla by Sweden’s FM Mattsson Mora Group

Adamsez’s monthly revenue has trebled, with November being the biggest sales month in many years.

NORTHERN REGIONAL COLLEGE PLUMBING APPRENTICES GAIN INSIGHT INTO FUTURE OF HOME HEAT... Trainingprovidedbymanufacturers andOFTEC

F inal year plumbing students at Northern Regional College are set to reap the benefits of invaluable training aimed at making them aware of upcoming changes to the industry. Against a backdrop of the recent COP 26 summit in Glasgow and announcements by the UK and Irish governments on plans to move to carbon zero technologies, regulator OFTEC, along with several oil boiler manufacturers, has demonstrated their commitment to supporting the enrichment of apprenticeship training at Northern Regional College. Manufacturer Firebird has delivered training on their new and existing products and explained the advancements with Hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO) fuel. And Grant Engineering, with over 40 years’ experience designing and manufacturing highly-efficient heating products, introduced the students at the college to heat pump technology. This is in line with government strategies to cut climate emissions and phase out fossil fuel heating systems, and provides the apprentices with valuable insight

into how the sector is evolving and the opportunities available as installers and future representative in Ireland. OFTEC’s Sean McBride spoke to students about the importance of working to high standards and in line with regulations, ensuring safety for end-users and efficiencies of oil-fired appliances. Plumbing Lecturer at Northern Regional College Peter Lynch said: “It is fantastic for the students to speak directly to manufacturers and regulating bodies about current and upcoming changes to our industry. This helps to enrich the apprenticeship programme here. By keeping it current; students are made aware of exciting and new opportunities ahead of them as they finish the final year of their college training, highlighting what a great career choice plumbing really is.” More industry-aligned visits and guest speakers are planned for the remainder of the academic year, giving students a real feel for what post apprenticeship training is available for them and introducing more career paths within their chosen industry.

RESEARCH INITIATIVES TO AID LOW-INCOME HOUSEHOLDS IN UK AND IRELAND...

Grant backs deployment of renewable technology

Grant Aerona³ R32 6kW air to water air source heat pump.

W ith more than four decades of innovation, quality and high performance at the company’s core, Grant is supporting two important research initiatives aimed at reducing or eliminating the risk of low-income households being left behind in the transition to clean, smart, integrated energy systems. The first of these initiatives supported by Grant is RULET – Rural-Led Energy Transition – led by the Ulster University and the Northern Ireland Housing Executive (NIHE). The initiative is part of the SPIRE 2 (Storage Platform for the Integration of Renewable Energy) project, which is a €6.7m EU-funded, cross-border project aimed at evaluating, developing, and facilitating the wide- scale deployment of consumer-owned energy storage technologies, to operate profitably in the changing energy markets in Ireland and the UK. RULET is focused on making the full benefits of smart energy technology available to the most vulnerable households in the western counties of

Northern Ireland - a wind energy

hotspot. This includes the

installation of the Grant hybrid heat pump system, which has been specially designed for social housing. The first part of the RULET project aims to enable people to avail of agile tariffs - by running Grant heat pumps at a lower

tariff - when wind energy is available and when there is flexibility to run an HVO biofuel fuelled boiler when the electricity grid is at its maximum capacity. This in turn allows energy providers and the homeowners greater flexibility around tariffs and energy requirements. HANDIHEAT PROJECT Continuing to support the deployment of renewables across the UK and Ireland, Grant has also collaborated with seven partners across five European countries, as part of the EU-funded HANDIHEAT project. The aim of HANDIHEAT is to improve the energy efficiency and renewable solutions in housing and rural communities. This includes improved thermal comfort and reduced energy bills. In Fermanagh, six NIHE homes had their cavity wall insulation improved and two low carbon, electric heating models were installed. This included the Grant Aerona 3 R32 heat pump used in a hybrid model, working with a Grant Vortex condensing oil boiler. In this hybrid model, the heat pump takes the lead in heating the property, with the condensing oil boiler used during the colder weather. The Grant A+++ Aerona 3 R32 air to water air source heat pump, used in both the RULET and HANDIHEAT projects, is Grant’s most sustainable main heat source. Available in four outputs of 6kW, 10kW, 13kW and 17kW, the Grant Aerona 3

R32 has quickly become a popular choice amongst plumbers and installers due to its cleaner, more environmentally friendly performance, and its ability to lower a property’s overall carbon footprint. Commenting on the company’s involvement in these initiatives Barry Gorman, National Renewables Sales Manager at Grant, said: “We are delighted to be supporting both of these important initiatives and helping to advance the deployment of renewables throughout Ireland and the UK. Our hybrid heat pump system allows a 6kW Grant Aerona 3 R32 air to water air source heat pump to run in tandem with an existing boiler installation. Following basic energy efficiency upgrades carried out by the Northern Ireland Housing Executive, the hybrid system runs at high efficiency using wind energy stored overnight which in turn helps to significantly reduce fossil fuel consumption and carbon emissions.”

GROUND-BREAKING SET-UP SEES ENERGY-EFFICIENT HEATING AND COOLING AHUs OPERATING IN TANDEMWITH HYBRID VRF AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM... KERRIGANMECHANICALDELIVERS FIRST-OF- ITS-KINDCONFERENCECENTRE IN IRELAND

C layton Hotel’s new five-star Meeting and Events Centre, located at its Cardiff Lane venue in the heart of Dublin city, is equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure and facilities. Kerrigan Mechanical, in partnership with main contractor Monami Construction, was tasked by Dalata Hotel Group with providing the full mechanical installation for the conference facility, as designed by Patrick McCaul Environmental Consulting Engineers. Architects Douglas Wallace created a

split-level complex by incorporating a new mezzanine floor. With a capacity for up to 220 people, the new centre boasts three meeting rooms in the lower ground floor (below street level), while the upper ground floor incorporates a large conference space, which can be split into three smaller rooms if required. Impressively, Kerrigan successfully installed a uniquely innovative and energy-efficient system, making this facility the first of its kind in Ireland. The work included heat recovery AHUs and a highly sophisticated hybrid VRF

air conditioning system. While these two systems would normally be separate, they now operate hand in hand to achieve maximum energy efficiency. Such a complex set-up, which was a client requirement, needed detailed accurate BIM modelling from the highly- skilled team at Kerrigan. Francis McNulty, Contracts Director at Kerrigan Mechanical, said: “This approach ensured we could provide a system that would firstly fit in such a compact space and secondly perform beyond best expectations. It was certainly a challenge,

PROJECTTEAM...

but one we are proud to have overcome.” As with any project of this size, there were more than a few hurdles to overcome for the team at Kerrigan. With the void space being heavily congested by ducts, pipes and air conditioning, the company decided to use BIM to model all the plantrooms in a bid to utilise the limited space available to its fullest potential. And of course, Covid-19 restrictions slowed down the construction process, as it cut the number of people who could work on any aspect of a project at any one time. Despite these curbs, Kerrigan still managed to complete the work as scheduled, on time and within budget. But perhaps the most critical challenge presented was the removal of the existing gas line. Kerrigan installed a temporary gas supply running along the exterior of the building, before removing

the existing 4” line and replacing it with an upsized 6” pipe. “We had two extremely successful changeovers and were delighted to record minimum downtime of an hour for the second, which was to the client’s delight,” Francis added. “There was minimal disruption to the live hotel operations, which remained fully active and functioning for the duration of the works. Following handover, we took great pleasure in hearing that the hotel was at over 90% capacity for the majority of the time, and there were no complaints regarding any disruption. “We were delighted to be involved in such a high-profile project in the centre of Dublin. We have strong relationships with Dalata, Monami, Patrick Mc Cauls and Douglas Wallace and we look forward to working with them on other projects of similar scope in future.”
