Attention! Year 6’s theme day.

WW2 In an immersive history experience, the Year 6 were recently visited by 'Primary History Workshops' to step into the shoes of those who lived during the 1940s. Throughout the day, the students participated in a range of interactive activities, delving into the lives of individuals who played crucial roles during the war. The workshop included case studies of real-life Special Operations Executive (SOE) agents and Home Guard Operatives, allowing the children to gain insights into the bravery and sacrifices made by ordinary people during extraordinary times. One of the highlights of the event was the chance to examine genuine artefacts from World War II. The students had the opportunity to handle and explore these historical objects, further enhancing their understanding of the past. To truly immerse themselves in the experience, the children were encouraged to dress up in 'World War II' costumes. This added an extra layer of authenticity and helped the students connect with the era they were exploring. Throughout the day, the students engaged in various activities such as Morse code and secret cyphers, learning about communication methods used during the war. They also had the chance to plan their own operations, developing problem- solving and critical thinking skills. The workshop emphasised the importance of primary and secondary sources, encouraging the students to analyse and evaluate historical evidence. Storytelling played a significant role in bringing the past to life, allowing the students to develop a deeper understanding of the events of the 1940s. By stepping back in time and actively participating in activities related to World War II, the students gained a greater appreciation for the sacrifices made by those who lived through this challenging period in history. Another great launch to the learning at Abbey!

Readathon! Reading for charity.

BIRMINGHAM HOSPICE Hi, my name is Thomas, and over the summer holidays, I raised £160 for the Birmingham Hospice Charity, as part of their Big Birmingham Readathon. My favourite book was Hot Dog 2, because it was funny and the cat called Kev kept eating the bread baton they used for practice before sports day! Altogether, reading superstars like me raised £3,641.50 - enough for 182 teddy bears with the recording of a loved one’s voice for children to treasure forever! The Birmingham hospice sent me a medal and are coming to do an assembly about the work Birmingham hospice do soon.

[Ed - Thanks to Thomas and what an inspiration! Great effort.]

SMARTEN PARKING Inconsiderate and unsafe parking around our school has been a big problem, putting the safety of our children and others at risk. Please follow the tips on how you can make a difference. Our local West Midland PCSOs are working hard to advise and remind our parents about safer parking at Abbey. Thank you to PCSO Jayne Evans and PCSO Amarjit Randhawa from the Smethwick Neighbourhood Team for joining us on the road last week!

Bicycle, Bicycle! I want to ride my bike.

STABILISED For parents, guardians, and grandparents, witnessing their Year 6 children progress through life is a source of immense pride. Bikeability not only fosters a sense of accomplishment but also equips Year 6 students with essential skills for a lifetime of safe cycling. Before embarking on any ride, they are taught to perform an "ABCD" safety check, ensuring their air, brakes, chain, and direction are in optimal condition. They are also encouraged to be aware of their surroundings, take suitable riding positions on the road, communicate their intentions through signals, and adhere to the rules of the road. So, as Year 6 students gear up for their Bikeability adventure, let us celebrate their journey towards increased confidence, healthier habits, and a greener future. With each pedal stroke, they are not just learning to ride a bike; they are embracing a lifelong skill that will serve them well on their road to success.

Causeway Destroyed 5-0

BEATEN In a one-sided football match that left the home team shattered and in pieces, Abbey delivered a resounding 5-0 victory over Causeway Green. The match showcased Abbey's superior skills, leaving Causeway Green's new Head Teacher, Tracey Flanagan, questioning her decision. From the very beginning, Abbey dominated the pitch, displaying exceptional teamwork and unrivalled talent. Their relentless attacks kept Causeway Green's defence on their toes, unable to contain the onslaught. The scoreboard quickly became a testament to Abbey's dominance as they netted goal after goal, leaving the home team reeling. Tracey Flanagan, who recently took over as the Head Teacher of Causeway Green, couldn't hide her disappointment. In a candid post-match interview, she admitted, "I think I've made a mistake. Abbey is so much better. We have a lot of work to do to reach their level." Flanagan's words echoed the sentiments of the home team and their loyal supporters, who had hoped for a more competitive match. The defeat served as a wake-up call for Causeway Green, highlighting the gap between their current abilities and the level of excellence displayed by Abbey. While the result may have been a bitter pill to swallow for Causeway Green, it also presents an opportunity for growth and improvement. In the coming weeks, Flanagan plans to implement a rigorous training regime, focusing on enhancing the skills and tactics of the players. She also intends to foster a culture of resilience, teamwork and relentless pursuit of excellence within the team. As the dust settles on Causeway Green, one thing is certain: Abbey's dominant performance has left an indelible mark on the team and their supporters. It is now up to Tracey Flanagan and her team to rebuild, regroup, and rise to the challenge that Abbey has set before them.

Red Card! Standing together

TOLERANCE AND RESPECT In a bold move to commemorate Black History Month, our School Council took charge and organised an event called "Show Racism the Red Card" day. On the 20th of October 2023, our children united in a powerful display of solidarity against racism. The school council urged all children and staff to come to school dressed in a striking shade of red, be it a jumper, t-shirt, socks, or even a hairband. The aim was to raise awareness and foster a sense of unity within our school community. Importantly, this event was not a fundraiser, so no donations were required. The focus was solely on making a powerful statement against racism. Parents and carers were reminded that their children should come to school in their regular uniforms, but with a red item incorporated. For instance, a red jumper paired with their school skirt or trousers, or a full uniform complemented by red socks or a stylish hairband. The School Council would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all the parents, carers and children who participated in this momentous event. Together, we have sent a resounding message that racism has no place in our school or community. There was a t-shirt design competition which resulted in magnificent imagination. The school council chose a winning design which will be printed for the amazing artist and kept in school too, Let's continue to educate, empower and inspire our children to be the change they want to see in the world. Together, we can make a difference!

PLANET DUDLEY Year 4 just had a roaring good time during their visit to Dudley Zoo on Thursday, 16th November 2023! This ‘animaltastic’ educational trip was part of their science topic on human impact on the environment, food chains and animals. Canal Capers! Industrial impact

FIELDWORK Awright our kid? Yow goin’ up the cut? [Google translate: Friendly Black Country greeting – Are you ok and shall we go to the canal?]. A bit of local dialect for you because our fearless young explorers just had a whirlwind adventure through time! As part of their History and Geography topics, children had the incredible opportunity to take part in workshops that delved into the role of Black Country canals during The Industrial Revolution. These workshops were designed to give our budding historians a deeper understanding of the impact canals had on this transformative period of history. From the bustling trade routes to the innovative engineering marvels, the children got a taste of life in the past. But that's not all! The excitement didn't end with the workshops. Our intrepid adventurers also hopped aboard a boat for a thrilling canal trip that perfectly complemented their newfound knowledge. It was a hands-on experience, as the children navigated the waterways, imagining themselves as part of history. They witnessed first-hand the importance of canals in transporting goods and connecting communities.

Back in time! Spoon Dolls

Y1 PARENT WORKSHOP With a display of creativity and family bonding, Abbey recently transformed its hall into a Victorian wonderland as parents and children came together to craft their very own Victorian Spoon Dolls. This workshop transported participants back in time to experience the joys of traditional toy-making. A Victorian spoon doll was a traditional handmade toy that originated during the Victorian era in the 19th century. Easily created by transforming a wooden spoon into a doll, using various materials and decorative elements. The doll's head was typically made by attaching a fabric or yarn ball to the top of the spoon. The body then crafted using fabric, often wrapped around the handle of the spoon to create a dress or clothing. Additional embellishments like buttons, ribbons and yarn are used to add details such as facial features, hair and accessories. Victorian spoon dolls were popular toys during that time period. Under the expert guidance of dedicated teachers and staff, parents joined their children in a hands-on journey through history. Armed with wooden spoons, fabric scraps, buttons and yarn, families set out to create their own miniature works of art. From carefully selecting fabrics to fashioning intricate hairstyles, parents and children poured their creativity into every detail. The dolls came to life, each one a testament to the imagination and skill of its creators. As parents guided their children through the process, they discovered the rich history behind Victorian spoon dolls and the significance of handmade toys in the past. Supporting the children in developing their sense of chronology and the past.

Open the book! Warley Church

TOLERANCE AND RESPECT Abbey welcomed ‘Open the Book’ this week, continuing to promote world faiths. Open the Book is a Bible Society initiative that began in 1999, and since then thousands of school children have discovered Bible stories, during assembly and collective worship. It's a three-year rolling programme of themed and dramatised storytelling for primary schools. Abbey has welcomed our friends from Warley Methodist Church for many years and, the assembly held, supports our community in promoting tolerance and respect for all. Our children were a credit to our school with their respect, collaboration and contribution to these sessions. FOOTBALL Last Wednesday, a team of Year 1 and 2 footballers had an exciting opportunity to participate in a KS1 football tournament at the WBA Dome. They fully embraced the matches, showcasing their skills, scoring goals and providing support to each other. Throughout the tournament, they won one match, drew one and lost one, but their smiles and enthusiasm never wavered. Additionally, our Year 5 and 6 team competed in the EFL Cup on Wednesday, November 29th, aiming to represent WBA at the National Finals. Abbey got off to a strong start, taking an early lead of 1-0 in their first game, which eventually ended in a 1-1 draw. The team then went on to draw the remaining two games in the group stage. Although it seemed like Abbey might not progress beyond the group stage, an unexpected turn of events led to a dead heat for second place. To determine the winner, a thrilling penalty shootout took place. After three composed penalties, Abbey secured their spot in the Quarter Finals, where they faced a tough opponent - Mesty Croft. Despite putting up a valiant fight, Abbey was ultimately defeated by Mesty Croft, who went on to win the entire tournament. Nonetheless, it was a remarkable effort by our team, and we commend them for their hard work and dedication. Well done to the team!
