WELCOME! Since spring 2019, the Anderson Classroom to Career (C2C) Center has made possible for the School of Business and Economics to have its internship presentations in an expo format, where students who had internships talk to other students and faculty about their experiences, in a very engaging and interactive atmosphere.

Students who visit the expo also have the chance to network with employers in the area and hopefully establish connections for future internships or even full-time job opportunities. We are excited to see everyone at our in-person event on Wednesday, Sept. 26. Students will have the chance to connect with interns and employers, learn about specific internships and receive Pro Events credit. We will have the largest expo so far, with over 95 students having completed their internships this past summer. Here is a preview about our summer 2022 students and their internships. I hope you enjoy the School of Business and Economics Internship Expo!

TAYLOR CIESIELSKI ’22

MAJOR Business Administration HOMETOWN Stevens Point, Wis.

ORGANIZATION Sentry Insurance Stevens Point, Wis. TITLE Direct Writer – Dealer Intern

What I did: Each week I focused on a different line of business such as property, auto, inland marine, workers’ compensation, crime, umbrella, etc. In addition to learning each of these lines of business, I spent a decent amount of time desk shadowing with my mentor. We primarily focused on the auto dealer markets. I was able to observe the processes of submissions and renewals as well as MURY’s. Furthermore, I assisted the underwriters in getting their MURY’s ready by completing their property grades. I also attended weekly squad calls where we discussed new quotes, upcoming renewals, and safety recommendations with our nimble teams. What I liked: Over the course of my internship, I truly enjoyed when I desk shadowed with my mentor. It was beneficial to see the thought process of the underwriter as they determine if certain risks are within Sentry’s appetite. Desk shadowing gave me the opportunity to see the process of what to look for when quoting new submissions, how to push rate on renewals and just how to evaluate risk when looking at accounts with different exposures. Although there is a specific process to underwriting, I found that as an underwriter you have the opportunity to input your own judgment based on your own analysis of an account as well.

Future Dream Job: As of right now, I am still trying to figure out my dream career.

I was able to see if they have purchased from us in the past with the help of our CRM database, Epicor. MAJOR Business Administration HOMETOWN Kronenwetter, Wis. ORGANIZATION Northwestern Mutual Weston, Wis. TITLE Client Service Manager

What I did: I started my position off as a receptionist and an assistant for an advisor in Weston office. After some transiting and job promotions in the office, I was offered a full- time position as a client service manager. This position is like an associate finical advisor with added duties of marketing and client corresponding. I did day-to-day communications for my advisor. I also learned our CRM database, how to prep and complete life insurance applications. In July I started training in investments and it has been going very well. What I liked: I really enjoyed learning the aspects of being a finical advisor and what goes with the job. Before starting I had a general idea, but now I understand it is a lot more than just insurance. My biggest takeaway is that you must create personal relationships with your clients to have your firm grow. Without having those relationships, as an advisor you will struggle. The second advisor I worked with taught me the importance of Northwestern Mutual. I now feel like my position is significant in the steps of creating new relationships and helping my advisor grow his business. Future Dream Job: My dream job would be staying with Northwestern Mutual and advancing. I got to attend our annual meeting in July in Milwaukee. Being surrounded by 15,000 other employees allowed me to see the company’s mission and overall culture. I would like to grow into an office manager. I can also see myself as a trainer for all new advisors and interns. I enjoy seeing people accomplish their goals start to finish while also being able to help. What I liked: I really enjoyed the whole experience and figuring out what parts of a full-time job I enjoyed as I have never worked a first shift position before. I also liked being treated as a valuable employee by the company with many paid happy hours and outings. I also enjoyed learning how the rental process works and seeing how many insurance companies and local auto vendors we worked with in my area.

Future Dream Job: My dream job is a data analyst or a marketing coordinator.

MAJOR Business Administration HOMETOWN Clayton, Wis. ORGANIZATION Loparex LLC TITLE Business Administration and Accounting Intern

What I did: I performed updates on daily reports for the company, including production summaries and global inventory. I assist in updating all shipping and receiving data, as well as making inventory changes within the new database. More recently I have been assisting in cycle counts, my department goes around and performs checks for all material within the storage area for all machines and confirms the numbers within our software database. What I liked: I like how laid back my position is. I have had a few complications during the summer so far and my supervisors have been super understanding and are willing to accommodate whatever my needs may be. The ‘real-world’ experience I have been getting is enjoyable and I appreciate the fact that I have been able to develop my understanding regarding my field of study and others that are closely related. I have also appreciated many of the tips and tricks I have learned for apps within Microsoft Office, as well as the fact that I have been able to apply things I have learned in the classroom. Future Dream Job: As of right now, I still do not have a dream job. I would like to get more experience before choosing a dream job. Currently, I am interested in the human resources aspect of business administration and the money aspect, specifically financial analysis.

TITLE Intern

What I did: During my internship I got to learn what it’s like to be a manager and the different things that they have to deal with. I had to put together different merchandising techniques and think of different ideas on how they can sell more. I have also been able to put forth lots of ideas on a marketing plan for them and how they could implement those ideas. I’ve been put in charge of some team members to delegate tasks to. I have had to lead a department meeting and for that I got a vendor to give us more product knowledge and then discussed need to know information. I have had weekly meetings with the general manager to check in and discuss what I have been doing each week. I was also put in charge of the department for a couple hours for a weekend because my manager was out sick and I was the only one there at the beginning of my internship. What I liked: My favorite thing was being able to meet new people and make more connections with people I had never met before. I also liked the experience of being able to learn how to become a better leader and show my knowledge about the business world. I have also been able to express to them how to keep the leader mentality instead of boss mentality. I also enjoy always being able to learn something new. Future Dream Job: My dream job is probably to one day own my own business. All the experience I have gained along the way and will still be learning as time goes on has been prepping me with need to knows.

TYLER MCEACHERN ’23

MAJOR Business Administration HOMETOWN Menomonee Falls, Wis. ORGANIZATION W & E Radtke Germantown, Wis. TITLE Business Admin Intern/ Customer Service

What I did: I performed a range of duties during my internship. I first began by entering information into various Excel spreadsheets, including plant prep logs, planting line logs, moving crew logs, and production logs for setting down. These logs are all intended to record where the plants are placed and other details, as well as the plants’ average cost per pot. After that, I began investigating and documenting various benchmarking strategies they could use to boost productivity as well as related subjects like SWOT and MOST analyses. I also did some research on implementation strategies for those benchmark adjustments; however, I’ve been adding to it since and revising it. Additionally, at this time, I began to answer the phone and do my best to assist clients with any questions they had. However, due to my limited expertise, I wasn’t always able to do so. Along with that, I started to take over the phone orders, enter them into the system they use, give customers and drivers their invoices for orders, and print all the paperwork needed for the crews to pull the orders. What I liked: I truly loved learning the procedures needed to set orders up for pickup and everything else required to keep this plant nursery running smoothly. Additionally, I enjoy the atmosphere in the nursery and workplace as a whole. The office can occasionally be chaotic depending on the time of day, but when it’s not, it has a nice atmosphere because everyone there makes jokes and assists one another. They’ve already explained to me the advantages of having another employee in the office taking orders and taking phone calls. Future Dream Job: I don’t have a certain ideal job in mind, but I would like to work as a manager instead. A company that isn’t a major franchise like a fast food restaurant is what I want to work for; I don’t want to work at the conventional places of employment that you see everywhere. I wish to collaborate with others and take part in more crucial corporate choices. One of my high school friends and I have an ambition to open a bridal business together because she plans to study fashion and design at Mount Mary University. We believed that since I am now pursuing a degree in business administration, we might run a great and lucrative firm together.
