Can Human Error Be Cured?
M y wife and I have a routine to the television channels we watch, depending if we’re relax- ing outdoors on the patio, working in either her office or mine, eating, lying in bed at night, cleaning cars in the front garage, or working in the shop out back. (That’s right, seven TVs!) Luckily, we both understand and respect each other’s per- sonal choices, and with another stroke of luck, we both love “American Pickers” on the History channel. “Pawn Stars” is anoth- er favorite along with “Storage Wars,” some of the home restoration shows (“Restoring Galveston,” “Maine Cabin Masters,” etc.) and because he brings so much reality to working on old cars to light, “Roadworthy Rescue” with Derek Bieri’s unique ‘get er done’ approach. If nothing else, his banter is funny and a lot of his fixes give homebuilders the confidence and knowledge they need to begin fixing up an old car. Across the board all these shows are interesting, considering the wide variety of items we get to learn about, and sometimes their ballpark value, and examples of restoring cool old houses and preserving archi- tectural history. What my wife and I also have in common is 80 years combined experience preparing copy for hot rod and custom car magazines. Preparing copy means either writing it yourself or editing other writers’ copy. Once all copy has been paired with the photographs it gets designed by our artists and we finally get to see and read all that raw material turned into a typical article. After all these years we understand occasional typos and mistakes making their way to the printed page and have come to realize as much as we try, they do happen. The reason I mentioned our television favorites is because when they are wheeling and dealing any- thing automotive the mistakes pop out of the screen at us. Calling an early ‘30s coupe a roadster, or a clip from 1934 featuring Bonnie and Clyde’s bullet-ridden bodies in the ’34 Ford Tudor they met their demise in, being towed to the police station with the background crowded with large sedans from the late ‘30s and early ‘40s are mistakes that are easy to spot. We find ourselves copy editing everything, including the film editor! The reason we spend so much time copy editing
is the feeling a reader gets when they are deep into a story, intent on what they are reading, and then a mistake pops up. You can’t help but ask yourself how much other misinformation is there, and you find your confidence in the writer or magazine waning, becoming less authoritative, less reliable, and of less value. As this relates to television shows, my wife and I point out misinformation about the automobile environment many times, making us wonder how much is true about all the items we don’t have knowledge on. Taking information sim- ply for what it is will probably become even more prevalent in the future with the advent of AI, so the need to do your own research and not rely solely on one source of information, especially if research- ing from Internet sites, will still be required. Unfortunately all the proper research in the world can’t make up for human error. Try as we may, after all these years, we’ve learned no matter the amount of proofreading and corrections we catch, those nasty mistakes are lurking in the back- ground. In last month’s Curbside we identified the 2026 Ridler Award winner at the 73rd Detroit Autorama as a ’57 Chevy convertible instead of the ’56 Chevy convertible it is. We hope the owner Rex Satterfield, from Russellville, Tennessee, builder Kevin Riffey’s Hot Rods & Restorations, and the thousands of other rodders reading StreetScene understand this mistake was simply a human error and when we find a cure for that, we’ll be sure to pass it on to the world!

Cross Pollination As the sun sets over the majestic Hudson River, painting the water in hues of gold and amber, there’s a different kind of glow taking over the Cortlandt Waterfront Park in Verplanck, New York. For decades, this picturesque stretch of shoreline has been the stage for community gatherings, but for one spectacular weekend in September, it’s transformed into a showpiece of American auto- motive history. The air is thick with the scent of roasted corn and a hint of gasoline, and the rhyth- mic rumble of powerful engines provides the soundtrack to a breathtaking display of chrome, steel, and vibrant paint jobs. Hundreds of classic cars, from roaring muscle machines to meticulous- ly preserved antiques, line the park’s expansive lawn. But even among this stunning collection, one Ivory Parchment vehicle blends with the river while standing out amongst the kaleidoscope of colors, a testament to what happens when classic
design meets modern engineering. It’s believed this is the first Coast to Coast ‘39 Ford built as it appeared in their earliest marketing, including shows, ads and their “Handy Man Kits.” While its elegant, teardrop silhouette and iconic grille pay homage to a bygone era of streamlined design, everything else about it is a masterpiece in custom craftsmenship. The Coast to Coast ‘glass body gave the car its signature unbroken trim line, giving it a sense of perpetual motion. Pop the latch and you won’t find a Ford flathead V-8, but a Chevy small-block 350 engine, meticulously built to pump out a formidable 355hp. It’s a bold choice that speaks to the hot-rodding tradition of cross- pollination—marrying the best of different manu- facturers to create something truly unique. Air sus- pension allows it to be slammed low for that per- fect show-car stance or raised to navigate a tricky driveway with ease. Inside, every modern conven-
ience has been seamlessly integrated residing under a perfected Carson-style top. Power every- thing—windows, steering, brakes—makes this clas- sic a dream to drive. The custom upholstery and gauges echo the car’s vintage style while providing all the modern custom seating, air conditioning, and information an owner could want. This isn’t your grandfather’s Ford. This car isn’t just a vehicle; it’s a passion, a project, and the embodiment of a personal vision. It’s the best of both worlds—the timeless aesthetic of 1939 com- bined with the reliable power and comfort of the 21st Century. It’s a reminder that car culture is a liv-
ing, evolving thing, where the past is not just remembered, but celebrated, reimagined and, in some cases, made even better. It’s a spectacle of history and horsepower; all set against the breath- taking backdrop of the timeless Hudson River. Rich Severi Yorktown, New York Rich, This may come as a surprise to you, but when I read your submission for the 2025 Cover Photo Contest for this month’s Runner Up articles, I decided it was so well written our members would enjoy reading your story as it was written. San Luis Roadsters Cruise the Countryside By Louie Mayall
T he local car clubs and rod runs are the back- bone of street rodding. Across this great nation (and all over the world), tens of thou- sands of rodders spend millions of hours putting together their local area club shows. The result is that in every nook and cranny of this country there are cool rod runs, many regional favorites offering their unique twist on the perfect week- end. One of the most scenic examples of these gatherings is the San Luis Roadsters Run in San Luis Obispo, California.
are essentially duplicates of each other. Gather up at the host hotel in the morning, take a ride through the idyllic San Luis Obispo countryside, cruise around checking out cool things along the way, (it’s a lot like the grownup version of dragging Main) and meander around until dinner when everybody gets back together to feast. I think you’ll see what I love about this run because it’s not a run where you just go to park, but a run where you get to drive your rod. Runs like this are popping up all over the country and if there isn’t one near you, start one. I’d love to see everybody on the road cruising in the machine of their dreams. If this run looks like a good time and you are free May 14-15, contact the San Luis Roadsters on Facebook or 805- 305-4334.
Their perfect weekend starts out on Thursday evening with registration and a happy hour at the host hotel for the early arrivals. Friday and Saturday

NSRA Autocross 2026 American Autowire Spotlight
By Kevin Webb NSRA Autocross Director autocross@nsra-usa.com
I ’m very proud to announce American Autowire as a supporting sponsor of the 2026 NSRA Autocross Program. As a shop owner, I can tell you I’ve installed their wiring harnesses for many years and have always liked their quality. From a small two- man operation working from a basement to 100 employees and a 38,000-square-foot production facility, they have become one of the premier auto- motive electrical manufacturers for OEM/Restoration, and Street Rod/Custom vehicles. Many people don’t realize the importance of a good wiring harness in their vehicle. I hear the com- ment all the time that my wiring “looks okay” or “does- n’t wear out,” but unfortunately a few things are not taken into consideration. Many times electrical issues are not always the wiring, but the connectors. Heat cycles, humidity, and time can cause wiring to get brit- tle and crack or connectors to stop connecting. This can cause all sorts of issues with hard-to-find failures. Aside from these age issues, most vehicles have only six to nine glass fuses installed, with very limited ability to add circuits for a cooling fan or fuel injection sys- tem. Electrical demands from modern builds, whether for the street or track, are too much for older harness- es and they simply can’t handle the added loads of high-amperage alternators, cooling fans, and other accessories. All these loads can cause harness failures, and even a possible fire. In addition, all harnesses and gauge upgrades use a voltmeter instead of an amp gauge. Even way back in the ‘60s, increased demands from the cars’ electrical systems made manufacturers shy away from amp gauges for the safer volt gauges. This month we are going to talk to Marc DeMontigney, Sales and Marketing Manager for American Autowire: Kevin: A lot of people have a hard time deciding on the right wiring harness. How does American Autowire help with that decision? Marc: We have introduced different options over the years that help any installer choose the best harness for their vehicle. Our webpage Americanautowire.com and our great technical staff can assist anyone in picking the right harness for their vehicle. The “Highway” is the most versatile with flexible fuse box placement and freedom to customize with a labeled fuse panel. The “Builder Series” can handle big power, is perfect for tight wiring spots and fea- tures steel-reinforced terminals. “Power Plus” is a pre-wired and economical solu-
tion with factory style pre-wired fuse box. The “Severe Duty” is designed for rugged environments with a weatherproof relay panel system to power all your accessories. We get back to the basics with the “Route 9” a complete entry-level kit. It’s a basic ‘bullet- proof’ full-function electrical system that is compact and perfect for hot rods and rat rods. Finally we round it all out with the “Classic’Update’ designed for modern amenities in a classic vehicle. These are designed for specific make/model/year and are a vehicle-specific retromod wiring solution, complete with modern fuse boxes. Kevin: I know as an installer you are always com- ing up with new products and solutions for our cus- tomers’ vehicles, so what can we expect in the future? Marc: We are excited to introduce our new “Track 20 Modular Wiring System,” a complete power distri- bution panel built for modern road-going or track- centered builds. At its core is a centralized power sys- tem that organizes, protects, and distributes power while eliminating the clutter, guesswork, and limita- tions of traditional harnesses. The Track 20 fuse panel acts as the home base of your build, delivering organ- ized power distribution through a clean, centralized layout. The modular design is fully functional as is or it allows for easy growth with optional Relay and Accessory panels. It features 18 fused circuits, nine battery and nine ignition feed, plus two un-fused feeds, one battery for vehicle headlights, and one ignition for standalone EFI or HEI ignition systems. The Relay Expansion Panel holds relays for the horn, turn signal, and hazard lights, allowing an easy way to allow track cars to become legal, and the Accessory’ Expansion Panel offers disconnectable power in the form of 10 circuits with eight of them fused, keeping accessory circuits like radio, heater, wipers, and anything else you can throw at it isolated and organized, ensuring they don’t interfere with crit- ical systems, especially during startup and operation. It’s engineered to solve some of the prob- lems builders face in the real world. Kevin: Thanks, Marc, for pointing out the high- lights of today’s high-power-demanding electrical sys- tems. We look forward to welcoming American Autowire to our events in 2026.

How to Rebuild & Modify GM 6.6L Duramax Diesel V-8 Engines
By Dr. John F. Kershaw
B y the late 1990s, General Motors real- ized that its old Detroit Diesel engine, which had been designed 20 years earlier, was due for a major update. The Detroit Diesel engine was never intended to be a serious horsepower or torque monster. It was just a steady and reliable workhorse that made credible power, met emis- sions standards, and achieved decent fuel economy. As Ford and Dodge released new designs of their Power Stroke and Cummins engines, respectively, General Motors needed to follow suit. The first Duramax engine made its debut in 2001. Over the last 25 years, several ver- sions were introduced, all dis- placing 6.6L and all producing ever-increasing horsepower, torque, and efficiency. As with any engine that is more than two decades old, many now need a complete overhaul. In “GM 6.6L Duramax Diesel V-8 Engines: How to Rebuild and Modify,” all aspects of a rebuild are covered in simple step-by- step fashion with color photos. A brief history is provided, fol- lowed by diagnosis, engine removal, and disassembly proce- dures, which include the special tools that are required. Next are
inspection and machine work, which are followed by reassem- bly and reinstallation. Finally, a performance chapter is included with commentary by Gale Banks. Whether you want to tackle this project yourself or just want to know how it all works, this guide will help you along the way. The 8 1/2-inch x 11- inch, 128-page softbound book features 375 color photos.
